Castrol Oil and Sludge Build-up

Has anyone had any experience of using Castrol oil in their engines and then developed sludge? I have, I used Castrol Maganatec before and it caused my engine internals to be colored deep black.

Check out this exchange we had at Nissanbayan with a Castrol representative (a lot of Nissanbayan members experienced sludging using Castol GTX):

With a turboed engine and regular dino oil (which is what GTX is), wouldnt that be from coking happening in the turbo's chra?
Im not familiar with Magnatec. Its not a name that they use over here.

my friend uses castrol syntec on his mr2 and helped him change his oil. I looked at the oil filler opening and saw a lot of sludge build up and everything is black. Might be because hes got turbo or something but he always change his oil accdg to specs

Wow! Not only is he a tool, he's the whole shed. I didn't know they hire people like that in Castrol. Or maybe he tried to drink the oil.  ;D

Nope never tried GTX but I did use Magnatec for a couple of years thinking it was actually a synthetic oil.

It used to be labeled "fully synthetic" a few years back.

I remember using Castrol Syntec semisynthetic and experienced it turning brown faster than other oils Ive used. I attributed it to its "overactive" detergents. Browning is not really a bad thing but sludge is not pretty. Could the weight have been too thick for your application? I dont suppose you guys could send out oil samples for analysis?

When I used Magnatec it was 10W-40. While the owner's manual calls for a 5W-30, my engine is no longer new and pretty much modified and so I've been using 5W-40, 10W-40 viscosities. Ever since I've stopped using Castrol, I never experienced sludge again.

I didn't have too good an experience with Castrol but not to extent of having sludge. Its just that the engine felt heavy with the oil after a week.  This was first experienced with the Magnatec. The Formula RS, thinking it was fully synthetic and better. Same result. I got my oils for free, so I didn't really feel bad.  :)

@Conan

The reaction of the boss was very inappropriate. I'm sure he had in mind that the answer would be posted on a public forum. I'm sure he's not from marketing, hence the answer.

As for the hot fish guy, he's also not a marketing guy trying to do marketing. He tried to help, but ended up doing more damage. When you start a thread like that, you open yourself to all sorts of comments and reactions. There's nobody to blame but himself. It was as if he wanted comments, but only the good ones and not the bad ones.  :violent1:

brent, the formul RS is a 10w50 viscosity ata kaya it probably felt heavy.

Actually this happened when my car was close to stock. Turbo was/is (I'm on my third) water cooled my PCV was connected (no longer now, its hooked up to an oil catch tank but no oil build-up), no oil cooler and of course if you live in Manila you'll always experience stop and go traffic. Anyway whatever the reason is, switching brands elminated sludge build-up.

Yes that's what I thought. But performance wise it was no different from the Magnatec. Ever since 300V, I've never used a different oil in my car again.

I would really like to believe that the beamers are using German Castrol as factory fill, not the US Castrol which has a lot of reports of sludging. I have to pull up the link. BITOG has an extensive exchange of the 2 castrols. The G-Castrol is greenish in color.
So IMO we are not getting the G-castrol here.

It was stated by the Castrol representative in the Nissanbayan thread that the US oil formulation of GTX is different from that of the Philippines.

I think that guy HOT FISH needs to read and understand more of what he is saying. IMHO he is just a rep, and has no right to educate (credentials please) and  to stand for castrol if he has not even check on the data specs of other oils. And to make the story more interesting there is OIL ANALYSIS which he should also tackle. Maraming grey areas statements nya. How may he say Castrol is the best when he's got no results to compare? He actually destroyed himself and castrol, when in fact, as everyone could agree, could be an opportunity to gather and use feedback to improve the product and customer relations.
He sounds opinionated.. and to state na iba ang formulation ng castol US and castrol Ph... may choice pa ba tayo???? :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1: :violent1:
Bili na bila na Castrol EDGE ni HOT FISH.  ;D

Ang G-Castrol nga finds ways to improve more on the sludge prevention, which is (i forgot the other EU makers) typical of VW, AUDI and the others... Kaya nga may Manufaturers' rating recommendation sila. And G-Castrol meets the standards.

Bakit hindi nalang nila maging kautong din ang NB para makareformulate sila ng Modifiers? ay.... repackage nga lang ata mga castrol dito... galing US? mukhang galing sa... ;D

Sayang.
