is it true that low viscosity synthetic oils can cause leaks in older model vehicles?

ive been experiencing oil leaks ever since i switched to RP 10w40... ive replaced all oil seals, gaskets and o rings but the leaks still persist... my mechanic says it must be the oil... ??? ??? ???

should i switch back to mineral? if so, what viscosity and what brand is good? or would it be good to go for thicker synthetic?

2000 model car, gas,103k mileage, matic....

Thanks!

Depends on the engine and engine wear. At 103k kms, I suppose you're engine's pretty worn in... I'd suggest going to a "high-mileage" oil... there are 20w50s available in synthetic I believe... if thicker oil doesn't cure it, then it's something with the engine.

What car is this?

hey joseph0119, hi!

i suggest u add an oil thickener first to know if your problem will be solve than dumping your oil and buying another batch of new oil... medyo mahal din yan. pero bago na yung mga gasket and seal kamo eh... baka kaya kulang lang sa tightening torque or hindi kaya nagseal cya mabuti? petron has an oil saver in a small can, try mo muna un... saan ba cya nagleleak? side gasket ba between the head and block?henry

What area is it leaking?

joseph0119

im not sure dun sa terminologies pero the leaks used to come from the O Ring in the distributor... i had it remedied but after a few weeks, leaks nanaman from some other area i have yet to trace... i might try switching to a thicker oil nalang... hope you could recommend a good oil replacement given my predicament... thanks!

dalhin mo nalang kay speedyfix ung car mo... para makita talaga ung leaking problem mo, i think it's not the oil that is the problem, ksi even if you fill heavier weight oil, at normal operating temp, the difference of a 40 wieght oil and 50 weight oil inside the engine is only about 4 to 5cst,unless group V oil lagay mo that will swell any seal in the engine.  i doubt that the oil is the problem kasi you only bump to a next heavier oil  only if you are consuming oil without any leaks maybe by 1 quart every 2000kms, which means oil is getting pass the compression ring and getting burn through combustion process. suggestion lang.

I already had it checked at speedyfix before.... they recommended that i have the o ring replaced... i did that and the leaks stopped for a few weeks... then bumalik nanaman, this time di ko na matrace yung source ng leak. anyways, i guess you're right... better have it checked nalang ulit muna. thanks for the inputs!

its a 2000 esteem suzuki wagon... tnx

oil is oil. same viscosity oils will have the same viscosity regardless if they are synthetic or mineral under the same conditions/temps. if you are using a thicker oil to stop leaks then the engine is not running at the optimum. sayang din.

at that milage, it is pretty common for rubber to wear out. if it leaks, replace the seal and hindi na sya dapat bumalik sa same spot for another 100k. if it does may problem sa kabit. if palipat lipat also check/replace the pcv. it might be barado na kaya the engine is popping the seals out.

its pretty normal for an aged engine to leak oil. the viscocity has nothong to do with the leaks. best bet is to bring it to a competent mechanic and have your so a check on the oil seals. also dont buy the cheap seals as they  not last as long they should.hth
