Shell V-Power is now 97 Octane

Alcohol talaga has higher octane rating that gasoline, thats' why its 97.  But alcohol has less energy than gas so you will consume more than gas significantly.  Of course, they don't really tell you this.  They'll only tell you the positives.  Is that cheaper than Blaze?  It should be otherwise, the only reason for using it is to reduce our dependence on oil.

You have to understand how engines are tuned to understand the advantages and disadvantages.

Power increase is not caused by the gas per se.  Power is increased if you can run more timing advance or compression or boost.  In a gas engine, because of lower octane rating, you reach a limit where detonation can damage your engine.  But adding alcohol, you can run more timing, higher compression or more boost.

In a modern stock engine where the ECU is conservatively tuned, there is a minimum octane requirement until knock or tope happens.  Putting 97 octane will certainly give you more power if this is the case.  But most locally sold cars are made for regular gas.

I think the only reason Shell is doing this is cuz Sea Oil and Petron have already done it and it is politically correct to go to biofuels.

Dapat the oil companies should sell E10 at a much much lower rate so we can at least be on par with standard gas.  Otherwise it will fail.

Ok after driving the car in relatively light traffic V-Power gets a thumbs down from me. My engine feels like it lost a lot of low end power which is typical of how V-Power felt when it was 95 octane. Back to BLAZE at next fill-up.

Of course my result may differ from other cars/engines, but for Nissan SR20DET's don't waste your time with V-Power.

@Accord GTR
Regular E-10 has been made available by Sea Oil, Petron and Shell for a while now at cheaper prices. It's only now that Shell has applied to their "top-tier" fuel.

Conan was kind enough to be our guinea pig. Thanks. I had a feeling this would happen. As most of you said, alcohol has less energy despite the higher octane.

In the States, well in California at least, they have summer gas and winter gas. At a certain date, usually in October, gas stations start selling gas with a higher alcohol content (usually the maximum 10%) Car enthusiasts hated this day since the loss in power was always noticeable.

a liitle OT: Petron doesn't sell the Xtra Unleaded anymore and replaced it with Premium with E10

Please state what make and model your cars are, so that we know which cars this fuel is "compatible" with.

I'm not entirely sure... but my car felt a bit less powerful in the midrange with the new formula. This was dyno-tuned on the old V-Power 95 RON. Currently switched to Total's 95 RON... simply because Total has a sticker discount program, and I buy my gasoline at the same time as I buy my LPG.

i always gas up with v-power didn't notice any difference hehehe

my 1.6L Altis runs fine on the new 97 octane V-Power. it requires a minimum of 95 octane, so I guess the new V-Power is more than enough!  ::)

Mitsubishi Evo IX RS.  Mukhang compatible naman.  Di ko nafeel ung loss of power at low-end.  :)
