why do you need to see your car's oil and water pressure during high performance driving/racing?  :)
Particular about your car?

It's water temp and oil pressure not water pressure. If you're pushing your engine to the limit you need to watch your water temps. If they go too high you'll damage your engine. Similarly if your oil pressure suddenly drops, there is a problem with oil circulation in your engine and it's time to stop the car when this happens.

sorry my bad. i meant to say water temp and oil pressure.  :) is the stock temp gauge enough for racing?

and is there a "standard" oil pressure that should be maintained?

I'm not sure about other cars but my Nissan Silvia's stock water temp gauge is good for nothing. When it starts to move towards the hot zone the temperature is already way too high. For oil pressure you should get a "feel" on the oil pressure levels just by driving your car on a regular basis, cold start, at idle, at WOT, etc...

your silvia's stock temp gauge has been like that ever since? how did you discover that it is already inaccurate? what temp gauge did you install?  :)

how do i get that "feel" of the oil pressure in the different situations you mentioned?

oil pressure will differ with viscosity of oil, oil temps, etc...

You get a "feel" by observing it. I discovered my water temp gauge was inaccurate by damaging my original engine, a few others from my car club have experienced the same thing too! Defi gauges FTW!
