Hi i am considering to have my car repainted but i have some questions that need clarifications. Can anyone give me an advice to help me decide...My car is a 1995 Toyota Corolla. I had a washover twice years back.

First, i am considering to have a change color.  How much would it cost me to have it registered for the change color in LTO?  My ending number is 2, so will that be okay if i have the color changed right away and wait for the registration month(Feb 2012) to have its color change in my registration papers? by the way, it is still on a third party's name, i only have a deed of sale, so will LTO allow it to have a color change without transferring the name to me?

Second, I really can't decide if i will be considering a "Strip to Metal" or a "Washover"?  Some one offered me to have a "Strip to Metal" and told me that it is the best for a car because according to him "Washover" eventually will have "bubbles" on it (lumolobo daw) because the paint does not stick easily to the previous paint, that's what i understand from what he said. and he also told me that my car would be "Heavier" because the paint is just repainted over.

On the other hand, someone else offered me a "Washover" and told me that My previous offer was only good for the part of the Painter because "Strip to Metal" is a lot easier to do because it uses "Stripsol" or paint remover than using abrasives (the grinder sort of power tools)  to remove the previous paint leaving the primer only.  And he also told me that the original primer is the best primer because it will not make the paint to have bubbles (lumolobo), he claimed that "Strip to Metal" will bubble faster than "washover".  And "washover" is a lot cheaper.

So can anyone clarify these to me please.  I am not considering to have it done soon because both of them suggested to have it done when it is not raining, so i decided to have it done maybe a few months or so. though they both suggested to bring it to their garage because they will paint it in a roof covered area.

I just want to clarify that bubbles is caused by oxidation or rusting... Poor auto painting skills usually is the root. That is not giving attention to details! I think the added weight you mentioned has no significant effect.

Choose wash-over instead of strip/scrape to metal. Meron kaseng "gamot" yung metal bago pinturahan ng manufacturer para anti corrosion. Naaalis ito kapag nagstrip off ka at mas madaling kakalawangin yung body.

Have them sand it right down to the primer. Matrabaho lang. Better than using stripping chemical. Sandblasting is the best way to remove paint but it is a lot more expensive, usually done on collectible cars that have high value.

so wash over is better than strip to metal? i'll just ask them to sand it right down to the primer? any idea or any offer on how much? you can pm me the prices if you want, maybe i'll have it done last quarter of the year or 1st quarter next year just to be safe and probably no more rains... thanks

Yes! Washover is the best. Just sand it down to the primer like what sir Brent mentoned. The price will usually range from 13K up to 25K for washover. It depends on the shop and the paint that you are going to use. Choose the shop that has an oven for curing the paint to get a better output. :cheer:

ok. so its better to look for a shop with oven... but will that cost more compared to the ones without that? and that would be a lot faster?

Brent

Not all shops that say they have an "oven" have a proper painting booth. I've seen results from shops woth their so called oven being bested by those without.

so oven is not a factor after all... i am in balintawak edsa area... can anyone suggest me a paint shop that can suffice my needs?  honestly, i'd go for the cheapest offer but quality in service... i don't have a lot to spend but i think few more months may help me in saving a budget of 10-25k? will that include any repairs on the body rust problems?

Brent

I think your budget of 25k if you need to have body repair and rust treated might not be enough.

czn030

Try to save more because shops will charge you extra cost for body repairs. It is dependent on how much work needed for the body repair. There is an extra charge when it comes to changing the color and regarding that, set aside a few bucks for LTO purposes.

I don't know any shop near your location. Try to check Industrifinder here. There are shops located in QC near Balintawak and their phone numbers are available. Give them a call and bring your car to your preferred shop for an estimate.  :cheer:

i just need to clarify again, whats the advantage of stripping to metal? my mechanic is insisting on doing that instead of sandblasting? i really dont know what his reason? mind helping me. thanks again
