Put it this way...which is more expensive, regularly changing brake pads, or changing transmission/clutch?

:D :D :D
In a world of compromise, some don't.

I dont think so...in fact recommended ang engine braking specially driving downhill.

Benj

Going downhill is a different story, but when you're constantly engine braking just to stop the vehicle
(ie stoplights) then you're gonna wear out the transmission faster.

i always do engine braking lalo na kung nasa mood ako...hmmm feeling racy and spinning tires right after you exit the curve appex  ;D either flat roads or going downhill. i just keep one thing in mind, safety. let the whole system get to work(ur brakes, engine, trans, etc.) with this habit, i just replaced my clutch system (disk/p.plate/t.o. bearing) after 5 long years. no trans problems at all but i regularly replace my gear oil after 40k km. and engine oil every 2500-3000 km (castrol GTX 10w/30). ayun simula nang kumain ng langis recently (mild pa lang naman) after having this second hand baby for seven years plus 5 years from the previous owner... kaya... here comes the b16 sec. gen swap soon.

About kung masama naman sa engine, sa tingin ko ndi naman siguro masama, basta ndi mo iaabuse to the point na naglolock na ung wheels :)

ment

No problem with engine braking so long as you use it responsibly... i mean hindi yung lagi kang hataw ka ng hataw kaya napapa engine brake ka .... on normal average speed drivingok lang ang some engine brakes. Still .... best if you keep a car-length distance with the car in front of you so that you can release the tranny to neutral when speed is already below 10kph

downhill driving talaga namang dapat use the engine brakes .. safety driving kasi yan.

keep in touch always with the condition of your tranny / clutch ... IMHO

talontsi

its ok as long as u dont down shift just to used engine as braking good thing about it is in the event na mamatayan makina mo if ur in gear mayron kaparing vacuum pag nsa neutral ang trans mo at nmatay makina titigas na preno, on big trucks they used engine brakes as back up emergency brake asside from the parking brake some times they have 2 types of engine brake at the same time the jacobs and exhaust brake!

OK lang na mag-engine brake, as long as you don't redline the engine RPMs, and/or boil the ATF (if auto tranny). In fact, you'd want to engine brake on long and heavy driving because you don't want your brakes to fade too soon.

Using both the brakes and engine to slow down the vehicle is part of how the car engineers designed it to be used.

Do note that when driving on wet and slippery roads, and/or on dirt roads, don't engine brake too much and too soon as it may cause the rear wheels to drift.

I agree! Compare transmission parts P5000++ to brake pads P700++.  If you really want to feel safe or have a shorter braking distance, just invest in performance brake pads. Mas mura pa rin lalabas sa transmission.

I also had that habit before, until I met a BMW mechanic from the U.S. who pointed out to me that I shouldn't do that. He told me that I should't engine brake, unless I really need to, like going downhill or emergency stops dahil nga daw mas mura palitan ang brake pads.
