Good day mga 4x4 gurus... i own a civic sir before pero ibinenta ko na... i am planning on buying a pajero. i would like to ask you guys for some help kasi may nakita na akong 1996 pajero... 104,000 na ang tinakbo niya and they are selling it for 680,000. is that a good buy na ba?... what else should i look for or look at before i purchase any pajero whatsoever?

napansin ko rin na ang engine niya ay yung sa L300 pa na nilagyan lang ng turbo. hindi kaya under powered yung sasakyan nun?

pasensya na kayo when i am totally in the dark when it comes to such cars.

Thank you in advance!

The Pajero's are fine SUV's. However, it is hard to ignore the robustness of Toyota and the ease in modifying it. Check out the Land Cruisers and Surfs too. But only the ex-RHD's will be in affordable price ranges.

I am assuming you are talking about the 2nd generation Pajero with intercooled turbo. I am a bit concerned with the kilometers it has on it though. Perhaps you can negotiate for a further reduction in price.

Negative!  For that price, if you want a Suv, you may find a 2nd had Patrol or Trooper.

In stock form, I believe that both of these Suvs are more off-road capable and offer more power than the Phil spec Pajero.  Note that I said, "Phil spec."

Troopers have LSDs and Patrols have rear lockers.

I agree...

I suggest you have that pajero emission test...you can see if the engine is still in good condition because from what i know, that engine is prone to emit black smoke.

rocketboy

ok.... thank you sirs for the reply. so what model of pajero would you suggest that would fit my 650K budget?.... i am willing to extend that budget kung meron kayong sulit na ma-rerecommend.

i talked to a friend of mine, and he had the same comment... medyo mataas nga ang mileage ng sasakyan for that price. kapag binaba ba ng 600K yun sulit na po ba yun? but my main concern is the repairs that i have to make once i buy it na. feeling ko sa pag-calibrate lang nun yari na ako eh...hehehe...

sana hindi kayo magsawa sa pagreply...i am learning as i go along.

thanks thanks thanks!

Objectively the best Pajeros/Monteros should have the Super Select 4wd system and rear locker.

It's possible to find both of these features in a used Pajero/Montero but it won't be easy.  Also, Phil spec versions won't have a rear locker.

With your budget, you'll most likely end up with a former right-hand drive that has been converted or an older high-mileage Phil spec model that will have the 4d56 L300 engine equipped with a turbo and no-locker.

Pajeros have fairly high re-sale value so don't expect to get a lot from your budget.  But, if someone sells you a 2.8 turbo-intercooled version at P650K then go for it.

As I've said, you're better off getting a 97 Trooper or Patrol.

The Pajero isn't a bad vehicle but I believe that both the Trooper and Patrol are better values by far.

Check with Tsikot.com... They have a fair number of Pajero believers.

Ok din naman ang Pajero. It is one of the tried and true four-wheel drive SUVs. For me I dont recommend the converted models, I suggest you get the original LHD versions. So you wont encounter any problems. :)

With your budget go for the Patrol Safari. Its a more solid and powerful SUV.

Are you all set on a Pajero?  Are you open to other SUV's?  If you are, you might want to look at  the vitara.  i think you can get an almost brand new one at that price (Maybe even a brand new one). As for the utility side of it, The vitara will seat 4-5 people in just as much comfort.  In fact I find the rear seat of the Vitara to be more comfy than the Pajero.  The vitara is also just as capable offroad. Of course the Vitara sits  lower than the Pajero but thats just a matter of preference.  The Vitara is also easier to deal with in tight spots like Manila traffic or parking. You could also look at a new Feroza or New Suzuki Jimny.  The Paj isnt the only game in town.  I agree that if you are getting a used one, you might want to consider the Patrol.  Just some ideas.

Hi Rocketboy!

With your budget, I recommend you buying a used Nissan Patrol Safari instead of the Pajero. I've driven one before, and it is really powerful.

My uncle had the same Pajero which is being sold to you, and he said that the Pajero is really underpowered (les than 100HP) and has got problems with its emissions. I've owned a L200 before, and it does have the same 4D56 engine as the Pajero, and true, my problem with that too was its emissions. Super black smoke at higher revs.

Good luck! :)

Before buying anything, assess first what is your intention, what application, where would you be with that SUV, would you go hard offroading, these are the questions that need be answered.

I have a '97 pajero.... I got it last year and i use it as a daily driven vehicle. sometimes i brought it on some "LIGHT OFFROADING" trip with A.I. friends.

Above inputs by several members should be taken for consideration but you should know what are your needs and wants.

So far I am satisfied with my Pajero. Just post here if you have any question.

wala bang locker ang phil spec pajero? y does ours have 2h,4h, 4hlc, and 4llc on the lever.   :-[

imo, if your talking about a pajero being underpowered 4 its class, matched up against a trooper or a safari, hands down talagang underpowered cya but if youre talking about the pajero being underpowered 4 its body/weight i beg 2 disagree.  Our pajerocan give our old civic vti a run for its money. Meron talagang shortage sa arangkada ang pajero but once the turbo kicks in parang ok na ok. imo lang po yan ;D ;D ;D

btw. Our pajero was bought 2nd hand. Php. 650k at 65000km lang. It was owned by a friend of ours. Plus mas ok talaga ang ride ng pajero compared 2 a patrol safari. imho

Hello.  I drive a pre-owned '96 Pajero.  It was acquired 2 years ago with around 70K kms. for around Php800K.

I've used mine for Level 2 (level 3 toughest) off-roading in Porac, Pampanga.  I have also climbed Hi-Peak, Zambales and some urban off-roading (construction sites with other Tsikoteers).  The Pajero has never failed me.

Underpowered is relative.  Try driving one first.  I'm still hitting 120kph on Quezon Ave. on my way to school.  I had no problems with the steep climbs and thin air of Hi-Peak.  And I can keep up with my father's 3.0L V6 Montero in most road (and off-road) conditions.  Siyempre kapag humataw siya, iwan na ko.  hehehe.

My engine still registered a 1.1 (passing is 2.5 or below) during its last emissions test.  It was running on old oil and dirty filters.  Plus no muffler wash prior to testing and the fact that I'm not exactly the most forgiving Pajero driver around.  The Pajero may seem to spew black smoke.  But when the testing equipment does the sniffing, it passes with flying colors.

The Pajero does not have a rear differential lock.  It has a center differential lock.  This device allows the 4WD system to be used fulltime so long as the C/D is unlocked.   When you lock it, you are in a mode similar to the "4H" of other SUV's.  Adding a rear diff lock would cost you around 40K.

Parts are also cheap and plentiful.

My first choice was the Patrol.  But I had issues with the durability of the interior materials.  They age easily unlike the hard plastics in the Pajero (Patrols use pressed vinyl).

No Lockers. Only a central diffirential...it has 4Lc and 4Hc... super select.

I can race with a car from a stop light because of the torque of a pajero.... a good case is at north xpressway... may stop light don.... its raining pa at that time. Sometimes its also on the driver how brave you can avoid tight situations. ..... when you shiver a little bit that is the thrill... it seems your head getting bigger.

Regarding ride comfort..... I changed all four shocks and coil springs with OME.... now bale wala ang humps sa city driving..... ok din sa Light offroading. Two things if you drive it hard see to it you have a good synthetic oil and a quality air filter on it.

Pajero will have a hard time coping with a patrol on a highway, patrol has bigger ENGINE, no way a 2.5L or a 2.8L pajero can beat patrol.  The only compliment I got is Mas POGI ang Pajero.... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha nakakasama na tayo don... ha ha ha ha ha ha
