Second generation Toyota Fortuner arrives in the Philippines
The first generation Fortuner bows out after 10 years in production, along with two facelifts and a minor power bump in 2011. Taking its place is the all-new, second generation Fortuner, with new engines, transmission and technologies, along with a host of new safety features.
Riding on the second generation IMV platform, the Fortuner is second model to come out with the new following the Hilux pickup which debuted last year. Toyota says the 2016 Fortuner is a, "True SUV with style and confidence". Available in 2.7 G, 2.4 G, 2.4 V and 2.8 V, the 2016 Fortuner offers a wide variety of models throughout the range.
The exterior design is an evolution from the first generation model, along with aggressive Hilux cues in the front facsia. Both headlights and tail lamps have been slimmed down, keeping it in line with Toyota's design language for pickups and SUVs. Base model aside, the Fortuner gets LED DRLs and Bi-Beam projector LED headlamps across the lineup. The tail lamps now get LED guiding lights for better visibility and to give it a distinct style. G Models get 17 inch wheels while the V models ride on 18 inch wheels.
Measuring in at 4795 mm long, 1855 mm wide and 1835 mm tall, the second generation Fortuner is longer and wider than its predecessor but height has been trimmed down. For comparison's sake, the 2006 to 2015 Fortuner measures in at 4705 mm x 1840 mm x 1850 mm. Wheelbase has been retained at 2750 mm.
As for the interior, V models come in hues of dark brown, black and wood trim details while the G models boasts colors of chamois, black and dark wood trim details. The All-New Fortuner now also comes with a capacitive touchscreen audio with navigation and a Multi-Information Display for both the G and the V grades. The new multi-information display shows fuel eco, a compass, and radio display. Top-spec variants will also get a DVD touch-screen entertainment system with navigation, automatic climate control and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
The new Fortuner also benefits from Toyota's new range of diesel engines with the GD family. The new 1GD – FTV and 2GD–FTV engines are smaller than the old KD engines in terms of displacement but deliver more horsepower and torque. The 1GD-FTV is a 2.8 liter, 16 valve, four cylinder turbodiesel with variable geometry turbo. It puts out 177 PS and 370 Nm of torque with overboost rated at 450 Nm. Replacing the old 2.5 liter is the 2GD-FTV with 2.4 liters and a variable geometry turbo, putting out 150 PS and 330 Nm while torque on overboost is rated at 400 Nm. Transmission options for the 2016 Fortuner are a six-speed manual (2.4 G M/T) and a six-speed automatic (rest of the range).
On the safety front, the 2016 Fortuner gets Hill-start Assist Control, Trailer Sway control, Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control, ABS with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, and larger disc brakes. Airbag count goes up to seven with a pair for the driver and front passenger, side airbags, curtain airbags and one more for the driver's knees.
