BMW's M Division is let loose on the all-new X1

For the longest time, there has never been a full-fledged BMW X1 M. Sure, there have been M Sport versions of the crossover, but most of the time they only receive a sporty body kit, a minor suspension upgrade, and maybe a more upscale interior.

However, it looks like BMW has heard its customers' pleas for a high-performance version of the X1. Making its global debut is the 2024 X1 M35i, and it's the closest thing we'll get to a bonafide X1 M yet. While some might say it only has a dressed-up exterior along with M-specific extras, it has a souped-up powertrain under the hood.

It may only have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but BMW M worked its magic and upgraded it with a more robust crankshaft, an optimized oil supply system, and main bearing shells/caps derived from BMW's new six-cylinder engines. The result is a TwinPower Turbo inline-four that cranks out 317 PS at 5750 to 6500 rpm and a peak torque of 400 Nm between 2000 to 4500 rpm.

Paired with a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and AWD, BMW claims the X1 M35i can sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in a brisk 5.4 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h. Further helping the X1 M35i achieve better grip while on the limit include a mechanical limited-slip differential that caps the speed difference between the front wheels.

It also gets an upgraded adaptive M suspension. It consists of mechanically-controlled adjustable and frequency-selective dampers that BMW claims deliver agile handling and a comfortable ride. In addition, the suspension kit drops the X1 M35i's ride height by about 15mm – resulting in a more aggressive stance.

Stopping power, on the other hand, comes in the form of M Compound Brakes, four-piston calipers with 385mm discs at the front, and single-piston calipers with 330mm discs for the rear. BMW also said that unlike typical braking systems found on regular models, the X1 M35i's system is lighter which helps for faster stoppages.

Style-wise, the souped-up X1 looks aggressive with its massive M-specific grille, sporty front bumper, huge air intakes, stylish side skirts, and distinct rear bumper and spoiler. Complementing the exterior is a bold set of 19-inch alloy wheels although if you want something bigger, there's the optional 20-inch set as well.

Hop inside, and the X1 M35i greets occupants with an M-specific interior along with M Sport seats in Alcantara and Sensatec, with the former also used for the vehicle's instrument panel. Available as an option is the Vernasca leather upholstery which comes with special diamond quilting. The rear seats, on the other hand, can be split-folded in 40:20:40 while luggage capacity can be expanded from 540 liters to 1600 liters.

In terms of infotainment, the X1 M35i is now powered by the latest Operating System 9 which comes with the newest iDrive quick select features and connectivity. Customers can also expect it to have wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for seamless pairing of mobile devices. Other available features include; a panoramic glass roof, automatic headlights, a host of USB-C charging ports, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

The 2024 BMW X1 M35i will first be released in the US in October 2023 while Europe is set to receive it in November 2023. That means we could expect BMW Philippines to bring the souped-up X1 sometime next year. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed.
