Sixth generation Subaru Impreza makes global debut at 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show
After several teasers, Subaru has officially unveiled the all-new Impreza. The reveal marks the Impreza nameplate's 30th anniversary in the US after it was first revealed several decades ago at the 1992 Los Angeles Auto Show. Unlike its initial body configuration as a four-door sedan, the next-generation Impreza returns only as a five-door hatchback.
Revealed in full at this year's LA Auto Show, the Subaru Impreza is now on its 6th generation and features a stiffer chassis, a new 2.5-liter Boxer engine on higher-grade models, and the return of the RS trim for the North American market for the first time since 2005.
Starting with the most obvious first, the 2024 Impreza gets a sleeker and sportier hatchback design. Borrowing some styling cues from its crossover sibling the Crosstrek, the five-door features a new front fascia with a hexagonal grille, a trim bar that connects the sharp LED headlights, and a redesigned lower bumper intake. It gets a sloping roofline, distinct LED taillights, gloss black accents that highlight its new aesthetic, and stylish 18-inch alloy wheels that are available in the sportier variants.
Underneath, the automaker claims the Subaru Global Platform is now 10% stiffer thanks to improved torsional rigidity that they say will provide a more dynamic driving experience, a smoother ride, and a quieter cabin. In addition, the all-new hatchback benefits from a sport-tuned suspension (Sport and RS models only), SI-Drive performance management system, as well a dual-pinion electronic power steering rack derived from the WRX that offers a more direct and natural steering feel and response.
Over to its engines, the 2024 Subaru is available with two options; a standard 2.0-liter Boxer and a more powerful 2.5-liter flat-four. The former puts out a humble 154 PS with 197 Nm of torque while the latter generates more with 185 PS plus 241 Nm of pull. No matter the engine choice, both motors will only be mated to an 8-speed Lineartronic CVT as the manual gearbox option has been dropped entirely. And like almost all Subarus, the 2024 Impreza comes with Symmetrical AWD with Active Torque Vectoring for better handling and cornering.
As with all new Subarus as of late, the 2024 Impreza features the brand's new interior design. That means there's a huge tablet-like touchscreen sitting proudly at the center of the dashboard. The one in the Impreza measures 11.6-inches and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a full-screen display. It also benefits from Bluetooth, over-the-air updates, USB and HDMI connectivity, as well as Aux input.
Other available cabin amenities in the all-new 2024 Impreza include; dual-zone climate control, keyless access, push-button start, 60:40 split-folding rear seats, rear USB charging ports, a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat (RS only), a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, leather upholstery with contrast stitching, and the brand's intelligent suite of safety systems called EyeSight.
The 2024 Subaru Impreza will be arriving at US dealerships later this year with other global markets to follow. But since Subaru distributor Motor Image Pilipinas already discontinued it for the local market, will we get our hands on it in the foreseeable future?
