Talks of a 5-door Suzuki Jimny have been going around as early as 2019. Despite the continuous rumors, however, the existence of a longer Jimny has yet to be confirmed either by word or through spy photos. Today, it seems that all changes.
Over in Europe, a long-wheelbase (LWB) version of the Jimny has been spotted on the road with photos circulating on the internet. Apart from the extra distance between the front and rear axles, the prototype looks virtually the same as the standard Jimny sold in dealerships today. It even retains the rear-mounted spare wheel as standard. What's interesting about the camouflaged Jimny prototype is that it still has three doors. Well, at least it looks like it based on the spy photos. Suzuki possibly kept the 3-door design on test mules to throw off spy photographers.
Apart from effectively confirming the existence of a 5-door model, the Jimny LWB prototype opens up the possibility of more variants coming out. One of those is a Jimny pick-up. Back in 2019, Suzuki displayed a pick-up version of the Jimny, albeit as a concept, at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
Judging by the number of people checking it out, it sure was a hit. With the wheelbase extended, it would be easy to just offer a bed. If not, Suzuki could offer a LWB variant altogether for improved rear legroom and cargo space. The current Jimny barely fits an adult at the rear seats. And with the rear seats up, cargo space is minimal.
Going back to the prototype, the Jimny LWB should be more or less the same as the standard Jimny under the skin. The 1.5-liter engine will likely be carried over. This includes the rigid axles and all-wheel-drive setup.
There's no word when we'll see the 5-door or a LWB Jimny. But based on a previous report, the 5-door variant is expected to debut in India, six months after exports of the India-built Jimny begin.
