For years, sim racers and real life racing drivers alike have relied on virtual circuits to sharpen their skills, but the accuracy of those digital recreations has often depended on the quality of the data behind them. 

Now, one of the Philippines' premier motorsport venues has narrowed the gap between simulation and reality. Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC) has been faithfully recreated for Assetto Corsa, and was officially launched in a private event last weekend that was attended by both sim and real-life motorsport personalities.

The virtual track is a result of the collaboration of sim racers, game developers, real-life racing drivers, race engineers, as well as geodetic engineers that captured the real-life circuit’s characteristics with millimeter-level accuracy. The track is also officially licensed and endorsed by the owners and the management team of the real-life Batangas Racing Circuit. 

Laser-scanned circuits have become the benchmark for professional driver training and simulator development because of their ability to faithfully reproduce real track surfaces. While an earlier community-built version of BRC has been available for Assetto Corsa, this latest iteration raises the bar by using professional surveying techniques to create a true digital twin of the venue.

Traditional track modding techniques such as reference photos and satellite imagery were used, but the track’s detail was further enhanced with laser scanning and the use of survey-grade drones that are usually used for construction, mining, and engineering projects.

As a result, the new version reproduces the circuit's exact layout, elevations, cambers, curbing, and surface details with such high precision for the virtual world.

This process also enables drivers to feel the subtle characteristics of the real BRC in the simulators - from elevation changes in corners such as the R-bend and the challenge of tackling the infamous Brian’s corner, down to the important braking zones and track undulations that influence how a race car behaves while going around the track.

For motorsport enthusiasts, the level of fidelity means the virtual BRC is more than just another racetrack mod. Drivers can familiarize themselves with the circuit before race weekends, practice racing lines, and fine-tune their car setups before hitting the real-life track.

The recreation also marks another milestone for Philippine sim racing, giving local motorsport fans access to one of the country's most recognizable circuits with a level of realism previously reserved for internationally renowned tracks.

The best part is that while the developers have put in almost a year’s worth of effort, time, and resources to recreate the Batangas Racing Circuit for the virtual world, the official BRC mod for Assetto Corsa is available to download for free.
