It looks like BYD's recall woes go beyond the Shark 6. In its home market, BYD is recalling older models of the Tang and Qin vehicles due to faulty brake stoppers.

Based on a notice released by the PRC's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall covers certain vehicles that were produced between 2014 and 2022 and encompasses 183,211 vehicles in total. Due to manufacturing issues caused by material abnormalities during production of the said components, certain batches of brake pedal stoppers could crack or deteriorate after prolonged use.

In a worst-case scenario, the faulty brake stoppers could detach, resulting in the brake lights illuminating even when the driver is not pressing the brake pedal. This can lead to other drivers thinking the driver is braking when, in fact, the driver is not pressing the brake pedal.

The recall affects 142,895 BYD Tang models, which include the previous generation Tang, the all-new Tang DM (Tang DM-i in other markets), and the latest Tang EV. These include 58,026 Tang vehicles manufactured between March 28, 2015 and December 21, 2018; 77,846 Tang DM vehicles built between May 19, 2018 and January 14, 2022; and 7,023 Tang EV models produced between December 27, 2018 and October 25, 2021. Meanwhile, the Qin model covers 40,316 vehicles, which were built between June 27, 2014 and June 9, 2019.

Authorized BYD dealerships in China will replace the affected stoppers, free of charge.

There's no word yet on whether any of the latest BYD Tang DM-i and EV models sold in the Philippines are part of the recall in China.
