BYD's popular plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pickup truck is being recalled by the automaker due to a fault. According to the automaker, certain examples built from 2024 to 2026 need to have their spare wheel assembly checked due to a fault that can cause the spare wheel to detach.

So far, 32,009 examples of the 2024 to 2026 BYD Shark 6 have been recalled in Australia, which were produced between August 29, 2024, and June 15, 2026. Other markets that are affected by the BYD Shark 6 recall include New Zealand (approximately 2,918 vehicles) and South Africa (no exact number of units affected).

According to BYD Australia, the defect is caused by potential abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable. Incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray, or insufficient torque fastening may cause the abnormal wear. Continued movement and friction during normal operation may cause the spare wheel to fall off the assembly.

BYD Shark 6 owners who wish to continue using the PHEV pickup are advised to remove the spare wheel from its mounting until a fix is applied. Speaking of a fix, BYD says it will replace the spare wheel lifter assembly with an updated design, free of charge to the affected customer. The replacement will take around an hour to install, added BYD.

So far, BYD Cars Philippines has yet to make any announcements regarding whether the Shark 6 units sold here are part of the recall. We'll be keeping an eye out to see if BYD Cars Philippines announces whether the country is also affected by the spare wheel issue.
