Watch out BMW, Mercedes-Benz Philippines reveals the EQS flagship luxury sedan

Last year, Mercedes-Benz Philippines launched a trio of all-electric vehicles, marking the brand’s entry into the zero-emissions luxury market. These include the EQA, the EQB, and the EQE. With the three-pointed star joining the EV bandwagon, they have its closest rivals like Audi, BMW, and Lexus on notice.

Fast forward to 2024, the Mercedes-Benz distributor IC Star Automotive Inc. has decided to up the ante after it officially revealed the Mercedes-Benz EQS. Serving as the brand’s flagship electric luxury sedan, some might say it’s essentially an S-Class on electric power. But unlike the ICE-powered S-Class sedan, the EQS is a liftback as it gets a rear hatch instead of a trunk. It also sits on a unique platform dedicated to Mercedes-Benz EVs.

Style-wise, however, the EQS shares a similar front fascia design as the EQE launched last year. But since it doesn’t have an engine under the hood, designers were able to make the vehicle sleeker to cut through the wind better. In fact, Mercedes-Benz claims it has a drag coefficient of 0.20 cd which makes it one of the most aerodynamic in the world. It even has a cab-forward design to maximize cabin space, huge 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, and a stylish rear end.

As for its dimensions, the EQS is 5223mm long, 1926mm wide, 1512mm tall, and has a 3210mm wheelbase. It also has a curb weight of 2630 kg.

Making its presence felt inside the cabin is the aptly named MBUX Hyperscreen. Unlike most Mercedes-Benz vehicles which come with a typical touchscreen, the EQS comes with three OLED touchscreens - one for the driver, one for the passenger, and the last one serving as the central media display. Combined, the massive Hyperscreen measures a whopping 56 inches in size.

Apart from having a huge resolution, the Hyperscreen is also loaded with features. For starters, the driver’s screen can show the instrument cluster, navigation, points of interest, and multi-info displays in real-time. The central screen, meanwhile, manages the media center and can control/display Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity features, climate control, and other vehicle settings. Last but not least is the passenger screen which can show entertainment options.

The rest of the cabin sees the EQS come with luxurious leather seats and a panoramic sliding sunroof that lets more light into the cabin. Also present are heaps of wood, aluminum, and leather accents throughout the interior, 64-color LED ambient lighting, power-adjustable and climatized front & rear seats with massage function, and a digital tablet on the rear center armrest to control the MBUX infotainment system. Last, but not least, the EQS is equipped with a pair of 11.6-inch displays with touch controls for the rear occupants and a 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system.

The 2024 EQS is available in just one variant, the EQS 450 4MATIC AMG. It comes with a pair of electric motors that dole out a combined 360 PS and 800 Nm of torque. It comes with a 108.4 kWh battery pack which gives the electric luxury sedan a range between 597 to 717 km on a full charge. It can also catapult itself from 0 - 100 km/h in a brisk 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.
