Electro-Lux: Toyota reveals 2024 Hilux Hybrid with 48V system

Toyota has made it clear that an electrified Hilux was on the way. They joined the 2023 Safari Rally Kenya with a mild-hybrid Hilux, and not long after it was known that Australia was getting it first. Now there's more news: Toyota is bringing the 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V to the European market.

Available in the Invincible variant, the introduction of the Hilux Hybrid 48V represents the brand's multi-technology pathway approach to carbon neutrality. In addition, Toyota believes that all customers need a wide array of affordable and practical options for electrified vehicles.

From its namesake, this particular Hilux gets the added benefit of a 48V mild-hybrid system that assists the 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine, making 204 PS with 500 Nm of torque. This was made possible thanks to a belt-starter generator that provides an additional 16 PS as well as 65 Nm of torque. The mild-hybrid system is also complemented by a 48V battery placed underneath the rear seats to not compromise cabin or luggage space. The placement of the battery also allowed Toyota to give the Hilux Hybrid a water wading depth of 700mm which is just 100mm less than a regular Hilux. Last but not least, the system comes with a DC-DC converter, a two-arm belt tensioner, and a more robust belt material which will allow the mild-hybrid system to withstand harsh conditions.

The Hilux Hybrid 48V is also the first variant with a Multi-terrain Select system. This allows drivers to set the stability control settings according to specific driving conditions. This can be set to automatic or the driver can choose one of five pre-set settings; Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock. Once set, the system calibrates to regulate power and wheel spin to enhance maneuverability.

The Hilux Hybrid 48V will first be available in Australia before Europe gets it around mid-2024. With the pickup truck now available with a mild-hybrid powertrain, does this mean the Fortuner will also get the electrified turbo-diesel?

As early as 2021, we've already received insider information regarding a Fortuner Hybrid. It was supposedly set to be revealed in 2022 although it seems Toyota had to delay its reveal. Hopefully, we get new insider info regarding the rumored Fortuner Hybrid soon.
