When General Motors first announced they were going to bring back the Hummer, some were skeptical about its return. Known for being one of the most fuel-inefficient vehicles due to its size and huge engine displacement, it was both loved and loathed by many.

But when GM said that they were going to make the Hummer into an electric vehicle (EV), all eyes were suddenly on GM.

After a lengthy teaser campaign, the covers have finally come off of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. Revealed as a boxy yet stylish pick-up truck, the all-new Hummer EV retains the rugged nature of its predecessor. At the same time, it uses a modern zero-emissions powertrain that can take you anywhere, no matter the weather conditions.

Despite having a more modern look, the all-electric Hummer still features familiar styling cues borrowed from the H1, H2, and even H3. However, the new EV version gets full-width style LED headlights, new vertical LED taillights, squared-off wheel arches, an upright windshield that harkens back to previous windshield designs, and massive 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

To keep the Hummer EV safe and protected while on the trail, GMC installed a complete underbody armor on the pick-up's chassis. It consists of sturdy steel plates that protect the battery pack and key suspension components from all types of debris. It even gets an adaptive air suspension system which allows drivers to raise the Hummer's ride height by up to 6 inches, allowing it to negotiate the toughest of terrains or the highest bodies of water.

At the back of the pick-up is a compact cargo box that features a power-operated tonneau cover. This secures the cargo box, as well as improve aerodynamics while on the move.

While the exterior of the Hummer still looks rugged, the interior is a completely different story. With an emphasis on high-tech design, the electric pick-up has a massive 13.4-inch touchscreen display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, as well as a two-tone leather interior complete with faux metal accents and trim pieces.

The driving force of the 2022 Hummer EV are three electric motors that GMC claims crank out over 1,000 HP, and nearly 16,000 Nm (yes that's not a typo) of pulling power. With that kind of power, GMC says the Hummer EV can easily go from 0 – 97 km/h in as approximately 3 seconds. It also benefits from a Drive Mode Control which offers driver-selectable modes. This can adjust the torque split between the front and rear wheels and even set the four-wheel steering for different driving conditions.

And if the going gets really tough, drivers can activate the Hummer EV's CrabWalk feature. In a nutshell, it allows the pick-up truck to literally walk like a crab for improved maneuverability across uneven or rough terrain.

On a full charge, GMC says the Hummer EV can travel for over 560 km. Should the truck need to be charged quickly, the Ultium batteries can be recharged to provide 161 km of range in just 10 minutes with an 800-volt DC fast charger.

Planning to get one for yourself? Better starting saving up as the base price of the Hummer EV will start at $79,995 (about PhP 3,888,390). Meanwhile, the most expensive model (Edition 1) will cost $112,595 (about PhP 5,473,250). Pricey? No doubt. But that's not bad considering GMC calls it a supertruck.
