New spy shots offer clearest look yet at gas-fed 2028 BMW M3
Development of the next-generation BMW M3 is officially underway, with fresh spy photos capturing a production-bound prototype pushing through high-speed dynamics tests around the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Unlike earlier test mules, the latest prototype runs with significantly reduced camouflage, giving automotive enthusiasts one of the clearest previews yet of what to expect from Munich’s legendary sports sedan. Visible details include a completely redesigned front end featuring a sharper grille arrangement, pronounced front and rear fender flares accommodating a wider track, and the hallmark quad exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear diffuser.

While the automotive industry rapidly shifts toward electrification, reports indicate BMW will continue offering an internal combustion option for its core performance benchmark. The upcoming M3 is expected to retain the brand’s twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, mated with a mild-hybrid setup to enhance low-end responsiveness while adhering to increasingly strict global emissions regulations.

Visually, the next M3 appears to bridge the gap between classic M proportions and the sleek, minimalist design language introduced on BMW’s modern concepts. The aggressive front air intakes, wide stance, and signature quad exhausts confirm that the gasoline model will retain a distinct, visceral personality compared to its future electric counterparts.
The next-generation combustion-powered BMW M3 is slated to officially hit global markets in 2028, with fully production-ready prototypes expected to reveal even more details as testing continues.
