High-performance crossover enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as fresh spy shots confirm that Audi Sport is hard at work on the first-ever RS Q5, alongside its coupe-styled sibling, the RS Q5 Sportback. Test mules for both body styles have been spotted undergoing high-speed dynamic evaluation on and off the iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Observing the two prototypes together reveals that development is progressing at different speeds. The standard RS Q5 prototype appears earlier in its testing phase, carrying temporary body panels and provisional trim. In contrast, the RS Q5 Sportback test mule sits further along in its evolution, already sporting a production-style rear bumper and integrated twin oval exhaust outlets. However, automotive observers note that even the Sportback likely still lacks 100 percent production-spec components compared with the aggressive widebody treatment typical of current Audi RS models.

Under the hood, the flagship performance SUV is expected to borrow heavy hardware from the RS5 line. Power is anticipated to come from a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with an electrified hybrid setup, pushing total system output beyond the 600-horsepower mark. To back up that firepower, Audi Sport engineers are expected to carry over dynamic chassis tech, wider track dimensions, upgraded braking systems, and performance differentials to ensure true track-ready handling.

The confirmation of a full-fledged RS Q5 program has also reignited persistent industry rumors that Audi Sport could be considering a return for an RS Q3 model to sit beneath it.

If current testing schedules hold, fully realized prototypes wearing production-ready bodywork and exterior trim should begin making public appearances by winter at the latest.
