2020 GLA 45 has 421 HP of Mercedes-AMG muscle
Mercedes-AMG reveals new 2020 GLA 45, packs a turbocharged 421 HP engine

Following the launch of the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and A45 last year, it would only be a matter of time before compact GLA crossover would also get the same AMG treatment. Now, nearly a year after, the GLA 45 has finally arrived, and it does it look good. More importantly, it continues to pack the same turbocharged engine as its hatchback and sedan counterparts.

Powering the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 is the same M139 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the CLA 45 and A45. It is available in two variants: GLA 45 and GLA 45 S – the latter being the more potent version. In standard form, the GLA 45 produces 387 horsepower. However, the S-variant packs an additional 34 horsepower - pushing the total output to 421 horsepower. Meanwhile, torque is rated at 480 Nm for the standard and 500 Nm for the S variant.

Both the standard and the S shift via an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Power is then sent to all-four wheels via Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Despite being a crossover, the GLA 45 can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds for the standard and 4.3 seconds for the S version. The top speed for the two GLA 45s is electronically limited to 250 km/h and 270 km/h, respectively.

In order to handle all that power, the GLA 45 features revised suspension to help reduce torque steer, while an aluminum plate has been added to stiffen the vehicle. It also features aluminum wishbones to help cut down on unsprung weight. Meanwhile, adaptive dampers are standard on all four corners. Larger four-piston brakes help bring the crossover to a stop. If the four-pot units aren't enough, the AMG Dynamic Plus package bumps it up to six-piston calipers.

Styling-wise, the GLA 45 now receives the AMG signature grill with vertical slats flanking the LED headlights. The fenders have been subtly flared to fit the meatier tires. Speaking of which, 19-inch wheels come standard but are upgradeable to 21-inch units. Other visual upgrades include more aggressive bumpers, twin exit exhausts, and a large roof spoiler.

Inside, the seats have been upgraded with larger bolsters to help secure occupants. If that's not enough, AMG Performance seats are available options. Other upgrades include a new steering wheel and yellow highlights on the S variant that help emphasize the vehicle's racing character.
