It’s only been two years since Hyundai first introduced the Veloster N hot hatch to the world at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show. Now, it seems the South Korean automaker has revealed an updated version for the 2020 model year.

You may be wondering what’s new since it looks completely the same on the outside. You’re right: Hyundai didn’t really tweak the exterior design of the Veloster N. Instead, they focused on what really counts: performance.

For 2020, Hyundai has fitted the Veloster N with a new transmission – an all-new 8-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox. The important thing to note here is “wet” which means that it is intended for high torque applications due to improved lubrication and cooling performance as opposed to a typical dry DCT (and its associated problems).

The automaker even claims that the wet N DCT increased torque output of the vehicle by 7 percent. Torque is now rated at 377 Nm as compared to the 353 Nm of the outgoing model. Some might say it is a small bump, but do remember that the 2020 Veloster N uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine already produces 250 PS (275 PS with the Performance Package).

Hyundai attributes the torque increase to a new tech called "N Grin Shift". This piece of tech allows the turbo to "overboost" and maximize transmission response for 20 seconds. The new gearbox also comes with N Track Sense Shift which can discern when road conditions are suitable for more dynamic driving. It will then automatically select the optimum gear and shift timing to provide the best performance.

Other new features of the 2020 Veloster N include Rev Matching, Launch Control, and Overboost. It can also sense the customers’ driving style and adjust accordingly such as when driving downhill.

All the new transmission features are then controlled through the 8-inch infotainment screen in the cabin. Speaking of the cabin, the interior has also been given an update. There are new optional N Light Bucket Seats which weight 2kg less than standard. The rest of the cabin remains the same.

The 2020 Veloster N will go on sale this month South Korea, and other markets will follow soon after.
