BMW surprised the world when they unveiled the first-ever i4 way ahead of schedule. According to the manufacturer, they revealed it three months in advance. This is no concept car either. What you're looking at is the production model.

In some ways, you're also looking at the next-generation 4 Series Gran Coupe;  remember, only the 4 Series Coupe has been revealed so far. From a design standpoint, the i4 looks much like the 4 Series Coupe, albeit with an extra pair of doors. There's the massive kidney grille and slim headlights at the front, along with a longer roof with a rakish rear section.

At the rear, it gets the same taillights as the 4 Series Coupe. A trunk spoiler aids in cutting down drag to maximize range. The same applies to the uniquely-designed rear bumper. As with most BMW electric (or electrically-assisted) models, there are blue highlights throughout the vehicle. For BMW fans curious about its chassis code, it's internally known as the G26.

For now, there are no photos of the interior, at least from the initial batch published by BMW. That said, expect it to be similar to the 4 Series with its new geometric theme. You can also look forward to a unique instrument cluster that will likely display more information about its battery charge and the electric motor. One thing that is confirmed is the new infotainment system. BMW says that the i4 is the first model to feature the new-generation iDrive 8 software. Expect the new operating system to be included in other BMW models down the line.

But let's move on to the exciting stuff: performance. The electric drive system has yet to be announced in full detail. Thankfully, BMW revealed its power output which is rated at 530 PS. This effectively makes it even more powerful than the M3 and M4 that already pack an impressive 473 PS. As for range, BMW claims a single full charge can help the i4 go as far as 590 kilometers.

That's all the details BMW is putting out for now. The manufacturer says more details about their electric four-door coupe will be published in the coming weeks.
