Did BYD Cars PH get approval to bring Shark 6 pickup truck?

BYD Cars Philippines had one heck of a year in 2024 after launching several vehicles in quick succession. From the humble but quirky Seagull to the segment-busting Sealion 6 DM-i, as well as sleek sedans like the Seal and Seal 5 DM-i, the automaker is putting every automaker on notice with their new energy vehicle (NEV) offerings.

For 2025, things will only get busier for BYD Cars Philippines. Back in November 2024, the automaker confirmed that they will be bringing more new models for the Philippine market. However, they did not exactly say which cars were coming in. However, based on a new recent regulatory approval, we already have a good idea of what to expect soon.

The automaker was able to secure approval for an upcoming light-duty vehicle that comes with a 1497cc gasoline-powered engine. More interestingly, the vehicle will also benefit from two electric motors; the front makes 170 kW or 231 PS while the rear puts out 150 kW or 204 PS. Last but not least, the light-duty vehicle has a reference weight of 2710 kg.

After cross-checking the numbers, it looks like we might say hello soon to the BYD Shark 6 pickup truck. First revealed in Cambodia and Thailand last year, the electrified pickup benefits from the brand's DM-o powertrain which is a derivative of the automaker's DM-i system.

The pickup comes equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that's assisted by a pair of electric motors. The engine alone produces 231 PS while the front electric motor generates 231 PS with 310 Nm of pull. The rear electric motor, meanwhile, puts out 204 PS with 340 Nm of torque. This gives the Shark 6 a total system output of 435 PS and 650 Nm of torque.

The vehicle also has a 29.58 kWh lithium-iron phosphate Blade Battery that gives the pickup an electric range of up to 100 km based on the NEDC cycle. With a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery, BYD claims the Shark 6 DM-o can travel up to 840 km with ease. It also benefits from a vehicle-to-load (V2L) system to power a campsite or worksite. As far as towing and cargo-carrying capacities are concerned, the Shark 6 is capable of pulling up to 2,500 kg and lugging up to 835 kg of cargo, respectively.
