Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is looking towards the future of in-car infotainment after announcing that they will be showcasing a new system that seamlessly integrates Uconnect and Android.

“This collaboration with Google has been an extremely beneficial opportunity for both companies to explore how in-vehicle infotainment and connectivity technology continues to evolve, and what it takes to meet consumers’ increasing desire for innovation of information with minimal distraction,” said Chris Barman, head of electrical engineering, FCA.

Barman added that with Android, they will be able to retain the familiar and easy-to-use Uconnect interface while benefitting from Android's features and apps.

The upcoming infotainment concept will be using the Android's latest operating system, Nougat 7.0. For its application with FCA's Uconnect system, it will be able to control the radio, as well as several comfort controls. Beyond that, apps such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, Pandora, Spotify and Pocket Casts can also be used on the infotainment system.

This collaboration with FCA brings together the industry standard for connected car systems with Android to create powerful infotainment systems designed for the digital age,” said Patrick Brady, director of Android Engineering, Google.

A hands-on concept demonstration of the Android-Uconnect system will take place at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 5 – 8, inside a Chrysler 300C sedan.
