Come August 17, 2021, Nissan will be launching a new NISMO model. Don’t worry. It’s not another version of the decade-old R35 GT-R. They’ve already revealed the 2022 GT-R NISMO a few months back. So what performance model are they launching next week?
At the moment, Nissan has not disclosed any information about the upcoming model. The announcement was also made through the official Nissan press site only. If you click the link, it redirects to an unlisted video on Youtube with a silhouette of the upcoming model. By the looks of it, the mystery NISMO model in question appears to be the Ariya.
If it is the Ariya, it would be the second all-electric model in Nissan’s lineup to get the NISMO treatment after the Leaf NISMO, which was introduced in 2018. Based on the photo, the model already wears a different front bumper. Expect it to get a matching rear bumper, side skirts, and a unique set of NISMO wheels. As with all NISMO models, red contrast accents will likely be applied to the exterior. Inside, there will also be NISMO-exclusive seats, sports trim, and red stitching. Essentially, it will receive the same treatment as other NISMO-badged vehicles available today.
But there is one important question: will the NISMO version be more powerful than the standard Ariya? Nissan did it with the NISMO versions of the 370Z and the GT-R. But for reference, the Ariya isn’t underpowered by any means. The most potent variant already packs 394 horsepower and 600 Nm torque, and it still has a 580 km range. All-wheel drive is also available as an option.
Will Nissan offer it outside of Japan, or will it be exclusively available for the country? Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out. Assuming it is the Ariya NISMO, we’re excited to see how the automaker plans to make its new electric crossover more performance-oriented.
