Honda Australia director says next-gen Civic Type R will debut this June

It was October 2021 when we first saw a glimpse of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. Despite being camouflaged, we got a good look at what the next-generation hot hatch will (eventually) look like.

Then in January of this year, the yet-to-be-launched Civic Type R made its first public appearance at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. They even released a teaser video of the upcoming hot hatch being put through its paces at the Suzuki Circuit. The all-new hot hatch was also able to set a new lap record for a front-wheel-drive production car at Suzuka, beating the previous record held by the Limited Edition Civic Type R by almost a second.

It's impressive for a car that has yet to be revealed to the public, but when will Honda actually take the covers off the 2023 Civic Type R? The wait is almost over as the automaker will supposedly reveal it next month.

According to Australian publication Carsales, the 2023 Civic Type R is scheduled to make its world debut this June as confirmed by Honda Australia Director Stephen Collins.

“It [the new Civic Type R] will be shown in the full – there’s been a lot of camouflaged stuff shown – in June during the European summer,” said Collins.

Details about the next-gen Civic Type R are not yet available. However, there are rumors going around that the hot hatch is expected to use an evolution of the 2.0-liter turbocharged VTEC engine. With that, enthusiasts are hoping engineers will be able to extract more horsepower and torque from the K20C1 VTEC Turbo.

Currently, the hot hatch makes 310 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to a 6-speed manual gearbox with a rev-match function to simulate heel and toe downshifting.

Since the global reveal will be happening next month, we won't be surprised if other markets like Asia will be next in line to get it later this year. Here's hoping Honda Cars Philippines will launch the all-new Civic Type R before 2022 ends.
