BYD Tang DM-i can do more than 1,190 km in one tank, full charge

Earlier today, BYD Cars Philippines revealed its biggest and most feature-packed 7-seater plug-in hybrid yet, the 2026 Tang DM-i. With three rows of seats, an all-electric range of up to 110 km, and a combined system range of 1,160 km based on the NEDC cycle, the BYD Tang DM-i undercuts some more expensive compact hybrid crossovers, frame-based 4x4 SUVs, and even other electrified midsize crossover SUVs.

It also packs quite the punch as the DM-i system consists of a 1.5L turbocharged engine that recharges the Tang's 21.5 kWh battery, along with a front electric motor that delivers 272 PS and 315 Nm of torque. Despite weighing in at over 2,130 kg, the plug-in hybrid Tang DM-i has plenty of power, space, and amenities to keep the family safe and secure on the road.

But just how energy efficient is the Tang DM-i when pushed beyond its combined factory range of 1,160 km? As before, BYD Cars Philippines enlisted the help of veteran race car drivers Georges and Louie Ramirez for an efficiency run. Just like the previous runs, the efficiency test was supervised by the Automobile Association of the Philippines to see just how far the Tang DM-i can go beyond the total combined range.

After all was said and done, BYD Cars Philippines announced that George and Louie Ramirez were able to drive the Tang DM-i up to 1,191.8 km with just one full tank and a fully charged battery. As a result, the Ramirez brothers were able to extend the PHEV's range by up to 31.8 km. While it may not be much, you have to remember the Tang DM-i is a midsize crossover SUV that can seat 7 and has a 1.5L turbocharged engine that serves as a generator.

With a suggested retail price of PHP 2.098M, the Tang DM-i is out to prove that 7-seater plug-in hybrids need not be out of reach for those who want an electrified three-row crossover SUV.
