Daihatsu revamps SE Asia vehicle plant for Wigo, Ayla, Agya
Daihatsu says the new plant features latest production efficiency tech for better quality

If there’s any brand that’s been hit the hardest by Toyota’s certification and quality issues last year, it has to be Daihatsu.
The Toyota subsidiary that makes vehicles like Veloz, Raize, Rush, Wigo, and Avanza all faced issues with vehicle quality, with multiple product recalls issued and affecting local units in the country. However, as Toyota has promised, they are moving forward and taking steps to correct the problems they previously faced in the various facets of their management.

For that, Daihatsu has revamped the Karawang vehicle plant in Indonesia that makes the Wigo. Daihatsu says the second line has now incorporated the latest technologies in terms of environmental friendliness and production efficiency.

The renovation increases the production capacity of the Karawang Vehicle Plant to 360,000 units annually – making it the largest overseas production facility of the Daihatsu group. They achieved that by incorporating a more efficient factory layout, increased automation rate for the body welding process, better coating efficiency for the painting process, and an assembly line that has equipment ready to handle heavy parts for future electric vehicle production.

In terms of reducing CO2 emissions, Daihatsu installed solar panels on the building roof and improved the air circulation within the plant to reduce the utilization rate of air conditioning equipment.
Daihatsu’s revamp of its vehicle plant could be the first in a series of changes to improve internal processes to manage quality issues and prevent further problems down the line.
