Last year, GAC gave us a preview of their upcoming model called the EMPOW55. Instead of a crossover, it was an aggressive-looking sedan that looked nothing like the brand’s current lineup of vehicles. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of information to go on about the EMPOW55 aside from representing the future of GAC sedans. Whether it would remain a prototype or enter production was up in the air.
Rather than leaving it as a concept, GAC has put it into production. Thankfully, the production model looks just as good as the one we saw last year. While we thought it could replace the GA4, it appears to be a standalone model. Unlike any other GAC, the EMPOW55 appears to be the brand’s first dedicated performance model.
First, let's take a look at the sedan's design. It’s very aggressive and could be the meanest looking model in GAC’s lineup yet. There’s a large grille that extends down to the bumper. The slim headlights feature vertical LED strips to match the grille’s design. Meanwhile, the intakes are accented by bright contrast colors.
From the side, it has a sleeker fastback design rather than a traditional sedan with a big trunk. At the rear, there are narrow taillights to match the headlights upfront. There are also vertical vents and an integrated diffuser on the bumper. Twin-tip, dual-exit exhausts, and a subtle trunk lid spoiler add more sportiness to the sedan.
Step inside, and you’ll find a modern cabin with a two-tone colorway. The black and red colors match the aggressive exterior design and are accompanied by sports seats. In front of the driver is a large digital display that incorporates the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. To match the rest of the cabin, the steering wheel features a red stripe.
Under the hood, the GAC EMPOW55 uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine rated at 177 PS and 270 Nm torque. It’s mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which powers the front wheels. With it, GAC says the sedan can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.95 seconds. The automaker also said that the average fuel consumption is around 5.7L/100 km or roughly 17.5 km/L, making it efficient.
There’s no word whether the EMPOW55 will be exclusively a China-only model. However, we’re hoping GAC does bring it into the Philippines. Not only would it be a great addition to the lineup, but it can also take the fight to performance sedans in the country like the Civic RS, and maybe even the Kia Forte GT.
