High-tech traffic lights installed by MMDA, NLEX in Manila & Caloocan
No more countdown timers

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), in a collaborative effort with NLEX Corporation, has installed three sets of new sensor-based, adaptive traffic signal lights at key NLEX Connector Interchanges in Manila and Caloocan.
These new traffic signals, located at C3 Road in Caloocan, España Boulevard (corner Antipolo St.), and Magsaysay Boulevard in Manila, are designed to organize vehicle flow and manage pedestrian crossings more efficiently. MMDA Chairman, Atty. Don Artes said that the new technology will benefit the 143,000 vehicles that traverse these intersections daily.

“These newly installed signal lights are not just ordinary traffic signals. They are equipped with adaptive signaling systems that use sensors instead of traditional timers. This technology allows for real-time adjustment to traffic conditions, which means better vehicular flow and safer pedestrian crossings,” Artes said during the turnover ceremony.
Both Artes and Arrey Perez, Chief Regulatory Officer of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the parent company of NLEX Corp., emphasized the project’s success as a prime example of public-private partnership.

Perez added that the initiative reflects a shared commitment to easing congestion and improving mobility for motorists and the community.
According to Artes, the MMDA has already replaced 90% of its traffic lights with this adaptive technology, resulting in better vehicular traffic flow and reducing the number of road crash incidents.
