Brabus has reimagined the iconic G-wagon into an open-top SUV with supercar performance.

The Mercedes-Benz aftermarket specialist has turned the G 63 to another extreme with the 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio. Ultra-exclusive with just 10 units worldwide, the G 63-based cabriolet packs a heavily modified 4.5-liter twin-turbo V8 producing, 900 PS and 1,250 Nm of torque. Staggering figures that put it well beyond a standard G 63 and into supercar territory.

The result is 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 240 km/h.

Getting the G-Class to go roofless wasn’t simply a matter of cutting off the roof and calling it a day. Brabus had to develop a two-piece, soft-top system comprising more than 500 components, including a reinforced windshield frame, heated rear glass, carbon-fiber roof bow and integrated “C-Bow” roll bar.

Common issues regarding soft-tops have also been addressed. Opening or closing the soft-top only takes 20 seconds, while each Cabrio undergoes more than 10 hours of continuous water testing in a climate chamber to ensure the roof and seals remain watertight. Only after passing these tests will the vehicle be delivered to its owner.

Under the hood, the standard G 63’s V8 has been modified like a serious race engine, with a displacement increase from 4.0 to 4.5 liters, by employing a larger bore and longer stroke together with a lengthy list of internal engine upgrades.

These include forged pistons, high-performance connecting rods, a billet crankshaft and larger turbochargers capable of running up to 1.4 bar of boost. Each engine is subjected to dyno testing using dedicated engine maps for injection, ignition and boost-pressure control developed by Brabus engineers for optimum performance with impeccable durability.

The engine exhales through a Brabus stainless-steel high-performance dual exhaust system with 3-inch downpipes and side-mount exhaust tips framed by exposed-carbon surrounds with integrated Rocket Launch Ambience Lights.

Selectable sound modes range from a gnarly V8 soundtrack to a quieter “Coming Home” setting, because even a 900-PS G-Class apparently has to keep the HOA and the neighbors happy.

For the exterior, the Rocket Edition Cabrio gets Brabus’ carbon-fiber Widestar widebody kit, with select panels finished in exposed carbon. Up front, a bespoke Brabus fascia features large air intakes and an integrated front spoiler, while an illuminated exposed-carbon grille surround highlights the tuner’s signature red stripes and illuminated Brabus emblem.

It rolls on massive 24-inch, Platinum Edition wheels with a three-spoke design reminiscent of the Brabus Monoblock II wheel from the eighties. But this one features aeroblade inserts made from carbon fiber that manage airflow and minimize turbulence.

Measuring 10 inches wide up front and 12 inches at the rear, these are wrapped in 295/30 ZR24 front and 345/25 ZR24 rear tires.

A Brabus RideControl coilover suspension, developed in cooperation with KW, lowers the G 63 by up to 45 mm, while the damping characteristics can be adjusted through the vehicle’s Drive Select control system. That should give this towering G-Wagen a sharper edge should the road gets twisty.

Inside, the Masterpiece cabin gets a combination of black leather and Alcantara, extensive quilting, red stitching and Brabus’ “Rocket Red” accents, along with exposed carbon-fiber trim and illuminated details.

The result is essentially a 900 PS luxury cabriolet, combining the boxy presence of the G-Class with the performance credentials of a Brabus Rocket.

And with only 10 being built, this is one G 63 that’s going to be considerably harder to spot than the usual tuned-up G-Wagens.
