MMDA explores AI for advanced traffic detection and control
Cameras will be the 'eyes' of this AI traffic detection and control system

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is now exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance traffic detection, building on its recent implementation of an adaptive signaling system.
MMDA Chairman, Atty. Don Artes announced the agency’s intention to advance traffic detection from traditional ground loop detectors to more sophisticated video detectors. “As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency,” said Artes.
He expressed hope that this technological upgrade could be in place by next year.

According to the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), traffic signaling systems equipped with video detectors are less vulnerable to damage from roadworks, severe weather, and physical interference. Powered by AI, these systems can also capture crucial additional information about vehicles, including speed, direction, and even license plate numbers.
Artes also presented videos that highlight issues such as inconsistent traffic signal countdown timers, drivers rushing through intersections, and beating-the-red-light violations. This presentation followed the MMDA’s recent removal of traffic light countdown timers at 96 intersections across Metro Manila’s major thoroughfares.
The old fixed-timer traffic lights have been replaced with an adaptive signaling system that utilizes sensors, and a full decommissioning effort has been carried out by the MMDA TEC.
