VW Philippines looking to join the EV arena with two new EVs by next year
By now, you might have already seen VW Group brands Audi and Porsche launch their own electric vehicles (EVs) in the Philippines. You may have been wondering if the Volkswagen brand will offer its own models as well.
With the new electric vehicle bill transitioning into law as it awaits the signature of President Rodrigo Duterte, and charging infrastructure sprouting up, Volkswagen Philippines may soon join the bandwagon. A well-placed source has shared that the German brand will also be introducing its EV offerings to the local market.
According to our source, the automaker plans to bring both ID.4 and ID.6 BEV models. The two vehicles will serve as the company's first EV offerings in the country and will both be crossover SUVs. The ID.4 will likely compete in the compact crossover segment while the ID.6 will join the midsize three-row crossover market. But where will these cars come from?
Given that they're already sourcing vehicles from Shanghai, it's no surprise that their EV offerings will come from China. That's right, the two EVs are actually produced by SAIC-VW which also manufactures the T-Cross, Lamando, Lavida, Santana, and the Santana GTS. With that in mind, we will see ID.4 X and ID.6 X iterations specifically; as the Crozz versions of both nameplates are being offered by the FAW-VW JV.
During our last trip to Shanghai with Volkswagen Philippines, company president Felipe Estrella III said that "they would eventually offer EVs at the right time, with the right product, at the right price."
Pricing for the ID.4 X and ID.6 X are not yet available. However, we were told that both EVs will likely be priced 10% to 15% higher compared to similarly-sized models that come with an internal combustion engine (ICE). A more favorable taxation climate in the future should make the prices of EVs more affordable in the future for VW and other brands.
Still, if the price is right for the ID.4 X and ID.6 X, would you get on board with an EV from Volkswagen Philippines? Let us know in the comments.
