Mazda Motor Corporation has officially revealed that the upcoming Mazda2 will feature the SkyActiv-D 1.5 diesel engine. The second-generation Mazda2 is expected to be based on the stylish Hazumi concept which debuted in Geneva early this year.

The Japanese automaker says the newly developed 1.5-liter clean diesel engine was developed in the pursuit of having ideal combustions despite a very low compression ratio.

Moreover, Mazda stated that the SkyActiv-D 1.5 diesel engine delivers performance that is equal to a 2.5 gasoline engine. It also features environmental performance without resorting to expensive NOx after treatment systems.

The SkyActiv-D 1.5 diesel engine inherits numerous innovative technologies from the SkyActiv-D 2.2. Mazda says that the SkyActiv-D 1.5 is infused with additional technologies that includes an expanded homogenous lean burn range, further reduction in mechanical resistance and insulation technology to curb the increase in cooling loss associated with a smaller engine size.

The upcoming Mazda2 featuring the SkyActiv-D 1.5 diesel engine will be first introduced in Japan. As of the moment, Mazda has not yet released the details whether it will be available in other markets.
