Think fast luxury SUVs, and more than likely you'll say Lamborghini Urus, Audi RS Q8, as well as the recently-launched Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat. Whether it's supercharged or turbocharged, these SUVs push well over 600 horsepower, as well as generate nearly 900 Nm of torque.
Clearly, these SUVs can give supercars a run for their money on a straight line. But when Bentley first released the Bentayga several years ago, many were doubtful about its on-road performance. Thanks to a W12 (and V8) twin-turbo heart, however, most were impressed by its speed, luxury, and outright looks.
Now, Bentley has proved once more that they are not just a luxury brand, but also a high-performance builder of cars. Recently making its world debut is the 2021 Bentayga Speed. Faster and more luxurious than the standard Bentayga revealed last month, the Bentayga Speed serves as the ultimate form of Bentley's first-ever SUV.
Like the Bentayga launched back in July, it gets the familiar styling updates. It gets the new quad-elliptical headlights, the bolder rectangular front grille, reshaped LED taillights, as well as the revised tailgate. In order to distinguish itself from the standard model, the Bentayga Speed features dark-tinted headlights, body-colored rocker panels, sportier front, and rear bumpers, and unique 22-inch alloy wheels.
Prefer your Bentayga Speed with a darker look? It can be specified with the optional “Bentayga Speed Black Specification”. With it, the roof rails, rear diffuser, 22-inch wheels, and the exterior brightwork will be finished in gloss black. Meanwhile, the front splitter, side skirts, and rear spoiler will come in carbon fiber.
Inside, it's easy to dismiss the Bentayga Speed for having the same interior as the non-Speed variant. However, Bentley made sure the more powerful W12 version gets its own distinct identity. Much like the exterior, the Bentayga Speed makes use of darker finishes that are complemented by touches of Alcantara and quilted leather. And to remind owners that they are in something special, the backrests of the seats are embroidered with 'Speed'.
A new touchscreen infotainment system makes its way onto the 2021 Bentayga Speed. It measures 10.9-inches and now comes with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. The navigation system has been upgraded as well and now features 3D building displays, satellite maps, and heads-up display support. The traditional gauges have been replaced by a fully-digital instrument panel that can be set to either 'Classic' (two-dial design) or 'Expanded' which replaces the right dial with media and navigation displays.
The beating heart of the Bentayga Speed is a stonking twelve-cylinder motor. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 puts out a healthy 635 PS along with a whopping 900 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Bentley claims the Bentayga Speed can sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 305 km/h. To save on fuel, it benefits from cylinder deactivation which can shut off half the cylinders.
The 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed will officially be available in dealerships around the world starting next year. It will then be joined by the Bentayga Hybrid which Bentley plans to reveal sometime in 2021.
