The Chery Omoda 5 targets the young and hip crowd

Chery has just launched the Omoda 5 and it's aimed at the young and hip crowd.

The new SUV will start at $13,800 USD which is roughly PHP 776,208. Earlier we reported on this emerging SUV. The Omoda 5 is the first compact SUV to evolve from the Chery 4.0 product line. Looking sporty and modern, the vehicle is 4400 mm long, 1830 mm wide, and 1585 mm tall. It also has a wheelbase of 2630 millimeters. The vehicle will offer wide wheel arches and will come with sporty black and orange wheels.

At the front, you will immediately notice the quadrilateral shape grille with split headlights on the top sides. The SUV also features a gradual side profile that steadily rises to give that sporty feel. There is a double-layer spoiler on top of the rear window. The taillights are housed in the light bar that extends from one side to the other. The rear bumper is fairly simple with small fog lights on top of the faux exhausts. The real ones are found under the bumper.

This China launch sees the Omoda with two engine variants. The base will have the 1.5T four-cylinder gas engine which will pump out 154 PS and will be partnered with a 9-speed CVT. The second option will feature a 1.6T four-cylinder gas engine (likely derived from the Tiggo 8 Pro) that will put out 194 PS and 290 Nm of torque. It will then be mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Details and specs of the EV version have yet to be revealed, however.

The interior is where Chery has done plenty of work. The automaker has kept the lines clean and stylish. It has a flat-bottom steering wheel and tiny air-con vents well integrated into the SUV’s dashboard. Behind the steering wheel, you will find a massive 12.3-inch screen where the instrument cluster and infotainment are found.

This system has voice integration, Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Baidu CarLife. It comes with a Sony sound system, 64-color LED “atmosphere lights”, wireless charging for mobile phones, and an air purification system. The center console will feature a very luxurious shift knob, six buttons, and a rotary dial. The Omoda 5 will come with a driver attention detection system for safety. Lastly, you will also get faux leather for the seats which works well with the overall theme of the interior.

Locally, we would love to have the EV version as it may be more appealing to the intended target market. But the gas engine variants are also very tempting. Chery has positioned this SUV higher than their Tiggo line in China and if they bring this to the local market, we may be looking at a more premium Chery. With the EV bound for the Malaysian market as well, we are hoping Chery brings it into ours.
